Today’s Castle Archive Files brings us to behind the scenes with the episode and the EPIC finale of season 4 “Always”. We are discussing editing of Castle with Marta Evry and clothes with Luke Reichle and get some many happy greetings from cast and crew members.

Castle’s editor Marta Evry (@venice4change) shares that the vast majority of the episode was edited by her husband and fellow Castle editor Warren Bowman (@warrenbowman). No connection between Brothers Bowmans (Rob and Stephen) with Warren. Tho, like Warren said in the Castle Convention 2012, Marta had “dibs” on the make-out scene. She helped out warren with many of the scenes. “True story, before I had even read the #CastleAlways script, I turned to @warrenbowman and said, “If there’s a sex scene, I’m cutting it.”" So, Marta takes credit of the “sex scene” cuts. Another scenes she is taking credit of is the murder board montage scene.

“Kind of gives the term “Shut the front door” a whole new meaning, doesn’t it? #Castle. LOL, I thought of it when I cut first the scene. I’ve been DYING to use it ever since.” Of course she can’t not mention her dear husband Warren: “So proud of @warrenbowman- he did such a great job cutting #CastleAlways”

“The first time I watched Nathan’s dailies where he says, “I’m right here!” it just broke my heart. Best acting he’s done on the show” – Marta voiced our thoughts really well. “First time I saw @warrenbowman cuts, it took my breath away.” She also says “Oh, and for the record, @Stana_Katic rocked #CastleAlways. It’s been amazing to watch her evolve and blossom over the last 4 years. In fact, all the #Castle actors @seamusdever, @Jon_Huertas, @tamalajones @btwprod are fantastic – they make our jobs so rewarding.”

We also learned from Marta’s tweets that Stana did most of her fight scenes. And there was no need for stunt doubles for the final Caskett scene. At least Marta said so ;) For comments about the editing, Marta answers: “Narrative filmmaking is fictional. As editors, we create “emotional truth” through manipulation. Whatever works, we do. #Castle”. For the jumpy and sometimes not so continuous cutting is called “jump cutting”. Its used to heighten emotion and state of mind. Continuity of action isn’t usually important. “Flopping” a shot is a common filmmaking trick but sparingly used because faces aren’t perfectly symmetrical.

In the end of the tweetslide, Marta makes a comment on her editing skills “When Rob needs someone to open the gates of hell, for some reason he thinks of me first :)
Castle costumer Luke Reichle (@RedCarpetLuke) dishes some secrets about the wardrobe used in the season finale. He says that Beckett’s should wardrobe has 17 leather jackets at last count. We wonder how many jackets does Beckett has overall? Luke also lets us know that prep for Always was very emotional. End of season always is, but this script! Keeping the emotional tone was very important. When it comes to Stana’s clothes in the season 4 finale, they used the same turtleneck from season 3 and season 2. It’s a touchstone piece for director Rob Bowman. It pulls emotional story forward. He also says: “The blue turtleneck is Valentino. That’s why it’s lasted two seasons. As my Nana would say, “You buy good, you have.”" In later scenes Stana Katic wears a taupe blazer from Theory with Slinkalicious knit blouse from Elie Tahari.

“Speaking of waiting for the other shoe to drop, (and since you asked) Beckett wears Merrell boots while hanging by her digits,” he jokes about the emotional scene, most beautiful and heart wrenching scene of the series probably. Beckett’s jacket is from the current Olivier Theyskens collection. Beckett wore the iridescent green @HugoBoss parka before, but not in 321.

As for the other cast members, Molly Quinn was wearing pink Juicy Couture robe. “Love the robe but I smelled like Juicy cologne for a week after shopping there”. Both @Jon_Huertas and @seamusdever wear custom suits designed at Raleigh Studios and built in Naples, Italy. “I started putting @Jon_Huertas in suits at the end of season 3. He and I talked about giving him an Danny Ocean feel.”
Seamus (@seamusdever) and Jon (@Jon_Huertas) had to shoot a seasons “Last day of filming” at least 3 times. “Heading to another “last day of filming” at Castle.” While enjoying the episode Penny (@btwprod) had a really good time “Even the bad guys are buff… enjoying this” and “Jon in the suit! Nice touch, huh?”
Andrew Marlowe (@AndrewWMarlowe) tweeted his season finale celebrations: “Today I’m celebrating the end of the season the way most showrunners do. I’m going to the dentist.” You may ask him why he chose
“The Killers” and “Hard Boiled”? – Clearly, Castle was trying to Woo her. #badpunassubtext. It seems that Terri (@TerriEdda) was included of filming the prolonged “wrap” of season finale “For those asking… wrap is not finite… there are “inserts” to be shot and then there is post prod. “Always” takes on whole new meaning.”
